Presenting our President-Elect for #IamMex16

Dear All,

I think this man needs no introduction to most of us, however for the new faces in IAMSLIC this year, meet our President-Elect Steve Watkins. He’s really friendly and approachable, so please do introduce yourself and say ¡Hóla! Steve looks forward to meeting and chatting with our IAMSLIC colleagues. As well as talking about all things library, marine, and IAMSLIC; Steve enjoys traveling, hiking, snorkeling and sampling fine wines.

Steve Watkins has been an IAMSLIC member for 30 years and currently serves as President-Elect and Convenor of this year’s conference in Merida. He was one of the three founding librarians at California State University, Monterey Bay as Coordinator of Technology Development and Science Librarian since 1995. He holds a BS in Biology from Stanford University with an emphasis on marine invertebrate ecology and received his MLS from University of California, Berkeley. At a small and growing university, he has enjoyed being involved in a variety of roles and services, including reference, information literacy instruction, collection development, systems and campus shared governance. At his previous position as Assistant Head of the Science Library at University of California, Santa Cruz, Steve did pioneering work in distributed information systems on the Internet and has continued to implement innovative technology solutions for user services throughout his career. One of his recent projects entailed putting the entire content of the Aquatic Commons, FAME Digital Library and SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department repositories onto a portable wireless access point running the LibraryBox platform, which enables access to 22,000 full-text publications in locations where Internet service is lacking or unreliable.
Steve’s interests include traveling, hiking, snorkeling and sampling fine wines. During this transition period of partial retirement, he also enjoys volunteering as a docent for a nearby beach state park. He eagerly looks forward to this year’s conference in the Latin American Region where we will once again have a wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with our amazing colleagues from the region, as well as visiting and learning more about Mayan history and culture.
