Membership Committee

Firstly a welcome to Sally Taylor as the new CYAMUS rep on the Committee and thanks to outgoing Janet Webster for her years of work and good ideas.
Do you know what the Committee does and how to contact your reps? http://www.iamslic.org/people/committees-taskforces/membership
Do you have ideas or a passion to help recruit new members? If so, we want to hear from you.
Do you remember your password and how to access the Membership Directory, Resource Sharing etc.?
We send an information note in English, French or Spanish to new members with passwords and how to access the various services, systems and people. Old members who have forgotten ‘how to’ can request a copy – and just this once my email follows.

Volunteer opportunity in the Galapagos Islands

Dear IAMSLIC members,

I have been living in the Galapagos for the past three months as Volunteer Librarian at the Charles Darwin Research Station. It has been a wonderful opportunity to manage a small library with such a specialized collection and to live in such a unique environment.

I will be leaving at the end of April, so we are looking for a new volunteer to start in April or May 2011 for a 6-12 month period. We are accepting applications now and plan to make a decision by late January.

If you are interested, please see the volunteer posting at:

Please email me at sally.taylor@ubc.ca if you have any questions.

IAMSLIC journals 2010

Barbara Butler and I presented a paper at the Mar del Plata Conference on core journals in marine science. We asked attendees to mark their top 20 titles. We indicated the top 20 from our 2001 IAMSLIC paper on the same topic. We are planning on doing a broader survey of the IAMSLIC membership. But, we have had several requests for the list with the compiled results That is attached. Please contact either of us with questions or comments.

New Book

The Director of Hopkins Marine Station has a new book out, “Death and Life of Monterey Bay: A Story of Revival”. Co-authored by Carolyn Sotka and published by Island Press, it describes the ecological history of Monterey Bay. Going back to the eighteenth century when the bay was a natural paradise, the book chronicles how it became the poster child for industrial devastation as described in John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row. The book goes on to tell the story of the residents who reclaimed it and how Monterey Bay became one of the most celebrated shorelines in the world.

Call for Poster Session IFLA 2011 in Puerto Rico

The 2011 IFLA Conference will be in Puerto Rico. The posters are a good way to show off everything IAMSLIC members are doing especially in Latin America and the Caribbean.

World Library and Information Congress: 77th IFLA General Conference and Council
“Libraries beyond libraries: Integration, Innovation and Information for all ”
13-18 August 2011, San Juan, Puerto Rico

An alternative approach for the presentation of projects/new work will be available for conference participants. An area on the conference premises has been designated for the presentation of information regarding projects or activities of interest to librarians. The theme may be presented by a printed poster or by photographs, graphics and texts attached on the given panel. All IFLA official languages – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish – are welcome. Presenters of a poster session will be expected to be present on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 August 2011 in order to explain their poster and to hand out available leaflets and other information material. Further advice on poster sessions may be obtained from IFLA Headquarters.

Colleagues interested in presenting a poster session are invited to complete the application form and send it together with a brief description of not more than 200 words of the poster (we would appreciate receiving a summary in English with your proposal). The deadline is 11 February 2011, after the deadline applications will no longer be accepted. A jury comprised of 2 members of the Professional Committee of IFLA will review all submissions.

The application form can be found at: http://www.ifla.org/en/ifla77/call-for-poster-sessions

Please send the completed form and description to:
