{"id":65,"date":"2008-08-13T16:18:04","date_gmt":"2008-08-13T23:18:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iamslic.org\/blog\/?p=65"},"modified":"2008-08-13T16:18:04","modified_gmt":"2008-08-13T23:18:04","slug":"bi-monthly-update-from-the-california-academy-of-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iamslic.org\/blog\/?p=65","title":{"rendered":"Bi-monthly Update from the California Academy of Sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following is a bi-monthly update on progress being made at the soon-to-reopen California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.\u00c2\u00a0 Opening day is September 27th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0.5in;\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Aquarium<\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"12pt;\">-Aquatic Biologists Dave Chan, Nick Yim and Nancy Levine returned late Friday from a very successful week of collecting with Monterey Bay Aquarium. \u00c2\u00a0A legion of Academy staff turned out to form a bucket brigade and help transport of hundreds of starfish, sea anemones, snails, crabs, chitons, limpets and other inverts from the loading dock to the <\/span><\/span>California Rocky Coast tank. \u00c2\u00a0It was great to see carts from Special Events, Accounting, Education etc all loaded with buckets of seawater and invertebrates. \u00c2\u00a0Thanks to everyone who helped out. \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"12pt;\">-Nick and Nancy spent about 36 hours in <\/span><\/span>San Francisco, and then left again for a collecting trip down in Southern California with Aquarium of the Pacific and Cabrillo Aquarium. \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"12pt;\">-The surf perch in the <\/span><\/span>California Rocky Coast tank are already giving birth- there is a group of 10-12 youngsters cruising the tank, doing their best to avoid the Cabezon and Rockfish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"12pt;\">-There are now more than 1,600 fish in the Philippine Coral Reef exhibit. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"12pt;\">-Biologists, Academy Staff and Contractors have begun to prepare the live food and jelly culture room in anticipation of the arrival of most of our jellies in early September. \u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"12pt;\">-The Swamp has been cleaned, prepared and is in final fill mode. \u00c2\u00a0Fishes and the Snapping Turtles will be coming over this week, in anticipation of the alligators arriving on the 19th. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"12pt;\">-The Alligator Gar tank is also in final fill and small fish (Texas Cichlids) will be placed in that tank within the next week or so. \u00c2\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"12pt;\">-Biologists are stocking the <\/span><\/span>Flooded Forest gallery focus tanks. \u00c2\u00a0Piranha are on site. \u00c2\u00a0Angelfish, stingrays, electric eel, and Mata mata will follow shortly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"11pt;\">-Interpretative signs are going up everywhere<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0.5in;\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Planetarium:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">&#8211; Planetarium seating installation was finished on the August 1. Now people will be able to sit down to see shows.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">&#8211; Most of the final construction, iron work, electrical and painting were completed in the theater.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">&#8211; Working hard last week and this to make theater capable of doing &#8220;talkies.&#8221; Namely, we&#8217;re finishing up the installation of the Meyer sound system.\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">&#8211; Speaking of talkies&#8230;.Sigourney Weaver was recorded for the planetarium show.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">&#8211; Production team views their work twice daily in the theater.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"0.5in;\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">\u00c2\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Museum:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">-The L-1 floor is full of exhibits!\u00c2\u00a0 Nearly all of the modules are in on the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Islands<\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (east) side, and a few of the exhibit frames on the west side (\u00e2\u20ac\u0153<\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Alerted<\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\"> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">State<\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) arrived last week. The graphics and audio\/visual equipment is currently being installed on the east side. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">-Upstairs, the <\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Naturalist<\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\"> <\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Center<\/span><\/span><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\"> cabinetry should be completely installed by the end of this week. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">-In the Early Explorers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Cove the exhibits are now nearly complete and looking very inviting for young visitors. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Larry Currie<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\">Academy Librarian<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><span style=\"Batang;\"><a class=\"alignleft\" title=\"California Academy of Sciences\" href=\"http:\/\/www.calacademy.org\" target=\"_blank\">www.calacademy.org<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is a bi-monthly update on progress being made at the soon-to-reopen California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.\u00c2\u00a0 Opening day is September 27th.
